Google Business Profile Posts: What to Post, How Often and What Actually Works
Which Business Profile post types exist in 2026, what to post for restaurants, trades, salons and shops, how often, why posts get rejected and how to measure them.
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is often the first thing customers see, before your website. We set it up to rank, to follow Google’s guidelines and to turn views into calls, direction requests and bookings.
The primary category is one of the strongest map ranking signals, and it is often set to something too broad.
Keyword-stuffed names, virtual-office addresses and fake reviews can get a profile suspended overnight.
No new photos, posts or review replies makes a business look closed, even when it is busy.
Competitor-backed primary and secondary categories for the searches you want.
Services, products, attributes, description, hours, holiday hours and service areas.
A photo plan and regular Google Posts that show real work, menus, offers and updates.
Review request templates and professional replies to every review, good or bad.
UTM-tagged website and booking links so profile traffic is measured in Analytics.
Changes follow Google Business Profile guidelines to protect you from suspensions.
Categories, completeness, reviews and competitors compared.
Every field updated and verified within guidelines.
Photos, posts and review replies on a regular schedule.
Profile views, calls, directions and website clicks reported.
Use your real-world business name exactly as it appears on your signage and documents. Adding keywords or cities that are not part of your legal or branded name breaks Google’s guidelines and is one of the most common reasons profiles get suspended.
Your primary category is one of the strongest map ranking signals. We compare the categories used by the businesses ranking in the top three for your main searches, then choose the most specific primary category that truly describes your business, plus relevant secondary categories.
List every service you offer in Google’s own service list and add custom services where needed. Write a description in plain language that explains what you do, who you serve and what makes you different. Restaurants should add menu items; retailers can add products.
Accurate hours, including holiday hours, stop customers arriving at a closed door and help you appear in “open now” searches. Service-area businesses should list the areas they actually serve and hide their address if customers do not visit. Attributes such as “wheelchair accessible”, “halal” or “women-owned” can match specific searches.
Upload real photos of your work, team, premises and products regularly. Google Posts let you share offers, updates and events; they keep the profile active and give searchers more reasons to choose you.
Ask every happy customer for a review using a short link, never offer incentives, and reply to every review professionally. Review volume, recency and rating all influence both rankings and clicks.
Add UTM parameters to your website and booking links so visits from your profile appear separately in Google Analytics. Combine this with profile insights (calls, direction requests, website clicks) to see what the profile is worth. For the bigger picture, profile work is part of our full Local SEO service, and your website should confirm everything the profile says; see website design.
Google Business Profile optimization is the process of completing and improving your free Google listing (formerly called Google My Business, or GMB) so it ranks higher in Google Maps and the local pack and turns more views into calls, direction requests, bookings and website visits. In the UK it is often called Google Business Profile optimisation.
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that “more reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking”. It also states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking (Google). Industry surveys of local SEO experts consistently rank the primary category, proximity and reviews among the most important factors (Whitespark, 2026).
| One-time optimization | Monthly management | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Profiles that are incomplete, outdated or newly verified | Competitive markets and businesses that want steady growth |
| Includes | Audit, geogrid baseline, categories, services, attributes, description, photos, tracking links, compliance check | Google Posts, new photos, review replies, monitoring for unwanted edits, monthly geogrid and insights report |
| Typical market pricing | Often a few hundred dollars per profile | Commonly $150–400 per location per month |
Market ranges are from public industry pricing guides; we quote a fixed scope after reviewing your profile.
Plumbers, roofers, HVAC companies and other businesses that travel to customers can rank without a storefront. Google lets you list up to 20 service areas by city or postal code, ideally within about two hours’ drive of your base, and hide your address if customers do not visit (Google). Virtual offices and mailbox addresses are not allowed. Your map-pack visibility is strongest near your verified location, so we support wider areas with genuine service pages and reviews. See how this works for roofing companies.
A 2026 study of 1.9 million AI citations for local searches across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews found that Google Business Profiles were the source of 28.6% of citations, more than any other platform (BrightLocal). Google also removed the old Q&A feature from Business Profiles in late 2025, with answers now drawn from your profile, website and reviews. That makes complete profile data, accurate services and a detailed website more important than ever.

The initial optimization is a one-time project. Ongoing management (posts, photos, review replies, monitoring for unwanted edits) keeps the profile active and is offered monthly.

No. Adding keywords that are not part of your real business name breaks Google’s guidelines and can lead to suspension. We improve relevance through categories, services, content and reviews instead.
A strong website makes your profile rank and convert better: it confirms your services, location and expertise, and it gives Google and AI assistants more to cite.
Common causes are an unverified or suspended profile, a primary category that does not match the search, incomplete information, too few reviews, or simply distance from the searcher. Our audit identifies which of these applies to you.
Market rates for a one-off optimization are typically a few hundred dollars, with ongoing management usually priced monthly. We quote after reviewing your profile, because a suspended or duplicate profile needs more work than a simple refresh.
A complete, accurate Business Profile with strong reviews is one of the most cited sources for local AI answers. Optimizing it, keeping details consistent across the web and publishing clear service information is the most reliable way to improve AI visibility.

No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads can appear above results, but organic map rankings must be earned.
Google recommends using as few categories as possible to describe your core business. Choose the most specific primary category and only add secondary categories that truly apply.
Posts are not a major ranking factor on their own, but they keep your profile active, show offers and updates, and give searchers more reasons to choose you.
GBP optimization focuses on your Google listing. Local SEO is broader: it also includes your website’s local pages, citations, links, reviews strategy and tracking.
